Bangladesh Part 2

I love looking at old pictures.  If it wasn’t for Ruthies awesome scanner (R.I.P) I wouldn’t have any of these.  So, thank you Ruthie.  I want to scan all of the ones I have now too!

One of the many boats that we would see all over the place.

I was the maid of honor at my friend Rupi’s wedding.  Don’t I look ecstatic to be there?  It was required to look appropriately sad. You couldn’t be too happy about a wedding there unless you were from the grooms side of the family.  And traditionally she (the bride) should have been wearing red and gold, which she did later.  Also, for al l you married women reading this…the grooms family picks out all the clothing for the wedding as part of the dowry.  My sari and the brides were chosen by his family.  If the matchmaker didn’t think that they were appropriately lavish she could reject them and they would have had to go shopping again. How do you like them apples?

IMG_0131 Buying fabric in the market.  One of the only places in town that you will ever see women.  It is so funny to see the salespeople.  They are all men, you walk into the store and sit on little backless stools and start pointing to bolts of fabric that go from floor to ceiling on the walls.  They start pulling them out and unfolding everything.  If they get really excited about making a sale (depending on the cost of the fabric) they will even wrap it around themselves in an effort to get you to envision what it will look like when it is all made up.  The pressure to buy is incredible and there are usually 4 or 5 stores all in a line that will try to compete for your business.  My favorite experiences were always when you would find a pattern that was nice for the dress and then you would look for a solid color for the pants.  They would start pulling bolts off of the wall and swear up and down that they went “perfectly” when nothing could be farther from the truth.  Matching is so relative. :) I used to kind of feel bad when we would go to leave and look back to see them starting to try and put back together dozens of bolts of fabric.  Literally.

Dress Up!

We went to the Exploration Station the other day and the kids has a blast as usual.  I kind of feel like there are only so many times that I can post pictures of us there before it starts to feel like they have been seen before.

This time though we spent more time in the dress-up area and Lily came prancing out with some interesting ensembles.

020 She had so much fun in this dress.  You can’t really tell but there are pink sequins all over the shoulders that were her “diamonds”. Also, she put on as many things as she could from the jewelry box.  Can you tell?

027 After I told her that her daddy would cry if he saw her wearing this she gave me this look.  She informed me that she wanted to wear one when she was big for when she married daddy.  Ummmmm, didn’t know what to say to that so we just moved on. :)

Jake and Lily as firefighters.  This part of the place never seems to get old for them.  Jake had to have the firedog with him. Lily preferred playing with the hose on the back of the truck.

We had a great time as usual. They love it there even though it gets old for the adults. I can’t wait til summer when we are able to do all of the outside stuff again. :)

Blast from the Past

I had the opportunity this Christmas season while at my parents to sit and reminisce.  We had a wonderful time recalling a lot of the fun things that we did as children and some of the not so fun. I got pictures while I was there and wanted to share SOME of them.  I think I will try to do a little something every once and awhile so that I have things written down somewhere and I am sure that some of the people that look at this will either recognize the people, the pictures, or recall the actual incident.

I love this woman.  Look at her FABULOUS hair and the expression on her face!

P1070790  The colors there are unparalleled.  The women get so dressed up to step out in public.  In some ways it is what we here in the States were like back in the earlier 1900’s.  I wish that we were still like that.  I get so sad when I see people out and about in pajama pants, looking like they just couldn’t care less about who they meet.  I have been plenty guilty of this in the past.  The good ol’ days…

This is Hanna.  She was one of my best friends growing up.  She is married now and has a BEAUTIFUL daughter.  I don’t know who her husband is and have never met her daughter.  I am terrible at keeping in touch with everyone from there but have been making some feeble attempts at communication more recently.  I would love to be able to go back and share my new life with my old friends and my old life with my “new” family.  Maybe someday.

The woman in blue is like a second mother to me.  She was our “ayah”.  She took care of the house and us, especially since my mom did travelling.  She always knew everything about everyone.  Not something that we loved but I am sure that my mother did. :)  I would love for her to meet my children.  I am sure that she would consider them HER grandchildren and if we were living there, I would want her to be there for them like she was for us.

Inauguration Bums…

Today was a tv day.  We spent the morning watching tv, the afternoon watching tv and most likely we will watch tv this evening. :)  Lily was at school this morning so Jake felt a little lonely.  He got a little bit of bonding time with his other sister.

Here are a few pictures…

Thank you so much for the cute outfit Uncle David and Aunt Rachel! She looks so cute in it.

Last but not least...her new favorite toy!  The Exersaucer!

004

Notice the drool all over the place??? It seems to be about that time for her.  TEETHING! We'll see how long it takes for them to start showing.  She always has her fist in her mouth and if you get any part of you body too close to her she immediately chomps down on it.  So far she is pretty good natured about the whole thing.  Hopefully that lasts. :)

More to come later. Happy 4 months princess!

How cold is TOO cold?

Bananas becoming weapons? Bubbles freezing? A glass of water becoming a cloud of snow?? I think all of that qualifies!

CNN Clip

Now, this is in Minneapolis but I can tell you that our temps are not that far off. Right now it is around -32 degrees. I know that I keep talking about the weather but what do you expect? All we can think about is how we are freezing! I will post something fun about the kids later.

I'm Back!

It seems like it has been forever since I have updated anything.  We have been so incredibly busy with visiting all of our family that I haven't really had a chance to sit down and do ANYTHING!

We had a wonderful Christmas.  Joe's parents arrived on Christmas Eve and stayed for a few days.  On Sunday we all packed up and drove to Milwaukee where we saw Matt, Christie, and family.  After spending the night there we continued on to Minneapolis to have a Lee family Christmas and a wonderful New Years party at the Dahls!  I left yesterday, drove to Milwaukee, spent the night and then hit the road this morning for the last leg of the trip.  Joe came home about a week and a few days ago so the kids were super excited to see him after not having him around.

We had such a good time with everyone!  A big thank you to all who were so gracious to host us AND a big thank you to Mom and Dad for making the trip out here to make this Christmas so special for us and our kids. :)  We love you all! Enjoy the pictures...
