This and That #1

Just thought that I would give you a little peek at some things that have been inspiring me recently. Maybe this can become a recurring post?!

beautiful mantel

Hello gorgeous! I love the look of silver, green and black. Beautiful!

berry wreath embroidered pillow

How pretty is this?? If only I had the time and patience. This would be perfect on my couch at Christmas.

bird jewelry dish

So, I have a weakness for pretty bird things. I love this little dish. Sitting on the dresser to catch change, keys, earrings, etc. Who doesn’t need one?

engraveable simple stocking holder

These stocking holders are so great! They are totally flat so you can set anything on them. Pictures, candles, ornaments, etc. I like the black iron ones better than the silver but that is just personal preference.

fall leaf pillow

This is so sweet. I love the non traditional fall colors on this pillow. It makes it look so fresh.

filled glass candles2 filled glass candles

These are really cool. How easy would it be to get some pretty mismatched glasses from the thrift store and fill them to make these sweet candles?

glass bird canisters

Again with the birds… Just picture a big airy bathroom in all neutrals with these sitting on the counter. LOVE. How soothing.

jewelry display frames

How neat. I could totally pull this off. A few mismatched frames, a can of spray paint, some wire and hooks and voila. Instant art and jewelry holder. Does it get any better?

laughter pillow

Love.

jute star pillow

How pretty. Some jute, burlap and brads and you have this sweet, natural Christmas pillow.

So. 10 concepts or things that I love and would love to see in my house someday.

All the images were taken from the Pottery Barn (love it) catalog online. They have such great stuff!

25 Years

This may be a little strange but I have a confession.

I am a nail biter.

I have been a nail biter since I stopped sucking my thumb.

My mother tried EVERYTHING!!!!! to make me stop biting my nails as a kid and then later as an adult.

I have tried stopping. I don’t know why I have never been able to. I think it is because I don’t even think about it when I am doing it.

So you can understand why this…

is exciting to me! I have not bitten my nails since July! What is interesting is that I prefer them to be short. When they got much longer than what is pictured they start to break. How do you people with long nails keep them from breaking??

I can’t.

So, here is to kicking bad habits!  So exciting!

In other, unrelated topics…

I have been working on the costumes and they are almost totally done! Exciting.

I have gotten all three dressers that I posted on Craigslist sold. The last 2 leave my house tomorrow morning.

Joe is home safe and sound after 3 days in St Louis. I have nothing to report on that front other than we had torrential rain and tornados touching down while he was gone which resulted in the playroom getting flooded.

It’s all good now.

While he was gone a friend of ours came over to hang out while I waited for stranger #1 to show up to get the first dresser. He brought the kids some cupcakes.

Seriously.

How cute are these?

They were filled with green frosting. It totally upped the yum factor as well as contributing to the spookiness of the whole thing! :)

Hannah bumped her lip on something and being overly emotional since Joe was gone INSISTED that she needed a bandaid.

IMG_0708

When we dropped Jake off at preschool his teacher did a double take and then let me know that she thought at first glance that I had taped her mouth shut! Oh, if only! :) She recovered quickly and now insists that she needs bandaids on her lip everyday because it was so much fun the first day.

So, there is a brief recap of our week. I will have lots of pictures to share of the kids in their costumes on either Sunday or Monday.

Until then, have a great weekend.

Earrings!

Pre-piercing.

Post-piercing.

She looks like an orphan because she had just woken up from a nap when we got there and wouldn’t let me do anything with her hair.

She insisted on Hello Kitty earrings. She loves them!

Help!

IMG_0670

These are Hannah’s “most favorite” shoes. They were $5 at Walmart and she loves them. In the process of potty training she has accidentally peed in them and now they STINK!

I have tried many things to no avail. Detergent, hot water, cold water, febreeze, and bleach have all been used. I am now attempting to use vinegar and baking soda. Here is hoping that it works.

If it doesn’t we will be trying some of the other methods that were suggested to me on my go to place for getting help. Facebook.

Work in progress

We got some lovely fabric and other such things at the store to work on Halloween costumes. Any guesses as to what they are going to be? FYI-It is incredibly hard to come up with a theme for all four kids without it being to weird for either Lily or Matthew. Of course I had to do a theme. I’m not going to have many more years of cooperative children. Right now they still think it is cool to be all similar. :)
So, throw out the guesses. Will post completed pictures later. :)

Becoming Minimalist

I have recently discovered a blog written by Joshua Becker that I find myself stopping by more and more often. He has so many insightful things to say.

Most recently he posted a list of 15 Surefire Ways to Impress Others.

Go. Run. Read.

I love it.

My favorites? 2, 3, 4, 5, and 14. Really, the whole list. No joke. I may print it out and put it on my fridge as a reminder for those days when everything seems to be going wrong.

Another great post on his site is a guest post. Minimalism for Moms was written by Faith Janes from Minimalist Moms. Eye opener.

Enjoy.

Haha! Can’t catch me.

So, I took this lovely little series today in the front yard. (Can a series be just 4?)
IMG_0618 Here they are.
Sweet.
Jake is giving Hannah a ride because he loves her.
Then this happened.
IMG_0620
IMG_0621
Upon hearing the commotion I ran out. I asked what happened.
Through tears and running snot I found out that the little angel hit her brother and pushed him off of the 4 wheeler.
This is the face she made when I asked her if that was what happened.

N.A.U.G.H.T.Y.
After a disciplinary moment, some tears and sadness, then hitting, screaming MINE, another disciplinary moment, more tears….
There was an apology.
He was happy. She was happy.
He didn’t give her rides anymore.
I don’t blame him.
The End.

Motivated?

I am not.

I have so much to do that I was feeling a little overwhelmed.

Enter list.

IMG_0600

Somehow, once it is all written down in black (or blue) and white I feel like it is all more manageable. Just some little boxes to check.

Yes, it is long. But I feel so much better now!

Just a few fun things to note…

The girls getting their wish list going with American Girls treasures.

No, they don’t have any of the dolls.

Yes, they desperately want them as evidenced by the pens in hand.

Things that make me smile.

IMG_0593

Yes. I did it. Tres Leches cake. As made by the Pioneer Woman. Love her. Love it.

You know a cake is going to be good when the directions state that you have to put the cake on a rimmed platter. Yes. To catch all the sinful deliciousness that is poured over it.

Is there anything better than a baby laughing?

I think not.

I know why “they” say a fairy is born every time a baby laughs for the first time.

Nothing is more precious!

Don’t mind the floor. Hannah decided that it was her mission to crush every piece of chalk she could find. Gotta love kids. Right? Right.

A Wedding

I just saw these pictures of one of my best friends growing up. I can’t tell you how many memories she is a part of. We haven’t kept in touch for years. I got her wedding invitation about a month ago and then a friend (Hannah Zellmer) of my sister Ruthie sent these pictures to WMPL. She is there at LAMB Hospital and my friends mom is working for her.
I was so excited to see the pictures. I am so sad that I wasn’t able to be there in person but I feel like I got to see a little piece of her day.
Isn’t she beautiful?

Priti Lata Hembrom's wedding 029
This is Priti (my friend) in the front, her sister Sriti, and their mother, Rani. This is the traditional sunum sasan (oil and tumeric) the night before. The bride and attendant (always the younger sister) are annointed with oil and tumeric to lighten the skin. Usually the mother and father are also annointed. In this picture I think she is getting ready to feed her girls a misti (sweet). Weddings are so much fun there!

It is also traditional for the bride to wash the feet of her guests. Notice, she is getting paid. When the person getting their feet washed is related in a certain way she is allowed to grab the ankle (they call it getting “crabbed”) and not let go until she (the crab) is paid. I have seen people give anything from cash to a calf. She will usually have an attendant with her that knows what that person is willing to go up to that tells her how long to hold on. They will always start very low. Kind of like an auction.

Doing the traditional Santal dancing. It is always a lot of fun! Everyone has a lot of rhythm, there is a lot of hip action and there are always a lot of laughs. The elderly ladies were always able to dance longer than anyone else.

Serving people at the wedding feast. Everyone is expected to eat until they explode!

The receiving line. It is done a little differently there. The guests all stand in a line and the bride, groom and attendant go down the line. The traditional greetings are: if you are younger than the person in the line you bow, if you are older you accept their bow. So, imagine walking down a line of a few hundred people and bowing to all of them on your wedding day. How would you be feeling by the end?

Gift giving. Usually the bride and groom don’t open the gifts. There is someone that does it for them.
I am so happy for her! Looking at all the pictures really made me miss life there. It is so different and yet so familiar at the same time. Hopefully someday I will be able to take my family there to see everyone and everything. I don’t think about what a big part of my life it is on a normal basis but when I do see something or hear something from there it really takes me back.
